Get Rid of Microsoft SQL Error 18456

Are you getting SQL error 18456 and an error message like the following:

“Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server , Line 1 Login failed for user ''"

“Login failed for user 'DOMAINNAME\ACCOUNTNAME'. (Error code: 18456).”

“Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. (Error code: 18456)”

The SQL error 18456 appears on the screen when you run the setup program to install the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and after completing the setup successfully you configure the settings in the SharePoint Central Administration after which you encounter the error. The most common reason for the occurrence of the error is the absence of any database creation rights in the Microsoft SQL Server. When the account used for running the application pool does not have the rights for database creation in Microsoft SQL Server, the Microsoft SQL error 18456 appears.

To get rid of the error you need to add account to the Database Creators role and to Security Administrators role in the SQL Server. You need to follow the steps given below to fix the error

  • Start the SQL Server enterprise manager.
  • Now expend Microsoft SQL Server, server group, Security to the given order.
  • Right click on Login and then click new login.
  • Type the account name in the format of Domain name\ Account Name.
  • Click on Server Roles.
  • Now select Security Administrators and Database Creators. Now click on OK.
  • Now quit the SQL Server Enterprise Manager.

On Configure Administrative Virtual Server page of SharePoint Central Administration create an application pool and specify it as application pool account. Click on ok. Now restart IIS by clicking on Start, Run and then type iisreset and then click on OK.

These steps are enough to remove the error from the application. You need to get rid of the error as soon as possible and perform mdf repair with a reliable and efficient third party tool because the error can make the database as well as all the database objects inaccessible.
